McDowell County Fire Marshal’s Office

The McDowell County Office of the Fire Marshal supports fire and life safety throughout the county by working closely with local fire departments, schools, businesses, and community partners. The office provides inspections, investigations, public education, and emergency management services to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure from fire, explosions, and natural hazards.

Fire Prevention & Public Education

The Fire Marshal’s Office provides fire safety education and outreach programs for businesses, civic groups, schools, and community organizations.

Programs focus on understanding fire codes, reducing fire risks, and promoting safe practices. Through community events, school programs, and targeted outreach, the office works to strengthen fire safety awareness across McDowell County.

Fire Investigations

When requested, the Fire Marshal’s Office assists McDowell County’s volunteer and combination fire departments in determining fire cause and origin.

Investigators conduct thorough scene examinations, interviews, and documentation, and coordinate with law enforcement when criminal activity is suspected. These investigations help identify hazards, prevent future incidents, and support accurate reporting.

Fire Inspections

Routine Fire Inspection Requirements

The State of North Carolina requires a routine fire inspection to be conducted on each commercial establishment in our jurisdiction. The frequency of these inspections is listed below. 

Annually- Hazardous, High-Rise, Assembly, Institutional, and Residential, except for one and two-family dwellings. In multi-family occupancies, this only includes the interior common areas of dwelling units. 

Biennially- Industrial and Educational Occupancies (Except for public schools) 

Triennially- Mercantile, Business, Storage, and Churches. I need to make this a PDF Guide that provides folks with information on what is inspection and how often it needs to be inspected. 

The Fire Marshal’s Office conducts state‑mandated periodic fire inspections for existing occupancies in McDowell County. Inspection frequency is established by the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code and includes annual, biennial, and triennial cycles based on occupancy type and risk.

These inspections help ensure continued compliance for businesses, schools, daycares, foster homes, assembly occupancies, industrial facilities, and other regulated buildings.
